South Africa Essay Sample

South Africa has a rich history, especially one in connection with the British Empire. Although British influence was not established until well into the 19th Century, there was already a divide in terms of people. Unlike other British colonies around the world, there is a unification which was present in South Africa. This was not a good thing for the native Africans in the land. Their rights as citizens were not respected, because on paper, it were the British who owned the land, and they were not allowed to occupy almost 90% of the place where they once called home.
This was a startling fact since the tribes who were present in the land even before the British came lived off their home for hundreds and thousands of years. As soon as the British Empire claimed this land, they were treated as outcasts. The Africans who still lived in the occupied territory did not have jobs. They were seen as competition by the settlers and were treated very harshly. They were known as labor workers, and those who were not considered “skilled” workers earned very little. This meant that in their own land, they could barely provide for their own families. This means, not only did the British reduce their political entities, they also did not have jobs.
The Africans did not have any rights, to vote, to own land and even for freedom. This was present in Africa for a very long time, and the natives were denied the right to even own the land that they lived on previous settlement. Although there is more “equality” now, the effects of this type of settlement still has its impact. There is still racial discrimination seen in the land, and the land that was taken away from the natives are still not rightfully theirs.
